Just after 11pm Friday night, Hernando County Deputies responded to 7514 Gordon Loop in Brooksville in reference to a hit-n-run accident. When deputies arrived on-scene, they met Michael Shawn Coleman, 50, who told them that he was driving westbound on Cortez Blvd near Blanches Gas Station when he was rear-ended by a large dark colored truck. Coleman advised that he was unable to obtain a tag number of the suspect vehicle.
Deputies examined a 2009 Ford Flex that had a large amount of damage to the rear drivers side of the vehicle. Coleman provided deputies with a sworn written statement of the accident.
While examining the vehicle, Deputy Luke Phelan noticed that the damage to the vehicle wasn’t consistent with Coleman’s account of a rear-end collision. There appeared to be no paint transfer from the crash and the shattered glass in the rear of the vehicle was not typical of a rear-end crash.
In addition, Deputy Phelan observed a tree on the west side of the property with fresh scrape marks consistent with being struck by a vehicle.
When confronted with the evidence, Coleman admitted that he had backed into the tree earlier and he lied about the accident because he didn’t want to disappoint the vehicle owner.
Coleman was arrested and transported to the Hernando County Jail and held on a $1,000 bond.
