A little over two weeks ago, over $15,000 worth of tools and equipment were stolen from a Hernando County business, Samsson Construction. The company is owned by professional engineer Richard Matassa. Matassa, who also owns ‘A Civil Design Group,’ posted a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.
According to a Hernando County Sheriff’s report, Jose Antonio Morales, Jr. was arrested Tuesday in conjunction with the theft. Morales is a former employee of Samsson Construction.
The report states that on May 6th, 2016, Morales entered the business at 3176 Shoal Line Blvd in Hernando Beach through what appeared to be an unlocked garage door on the north side of the business. Morales spent more than five hours through the night removing saws, welders, power tools and more valued at over $15,000 including tools taken from two pickup trucks located outside the building.
Sheriff’s Detectives were able to obtain pictures of the defendant and showed them to Matassa and General Manager Thomas Lacey who recognized the individual as Morales. Tattoos on the suspects arm matched those of Morales.
Morales was arrested May 24th and transported to the District Two Office for an interview. The interview ended when Morales advised it was not him and asked for an attorney.
Questions still remain concerning the theft and sources tell us more arrests could be made.
Morales has been charged with Grand Theft, Burglary of a Structure, Burglary of a Conveyance, and Possession of Burglary Tools.
