The unsuccessful challenger to Joe Meek in the 2012 Citrus County Commission race will be on trial in late February for a charge of attempted sexual battery.
Shannon Dain Heathcock, 46, did not appear for his hearing on Tuesday, which is allowed under the law. Citrus County Judge Richard Howard set Heathcock’s trial for 8:30 a.m. on Feb. 29th, 2016 with a pre-trial hearing set for Feb. 22nd, 2016.
According to a Citrus County Sheriff’s report, a complaint regarding an alleged sexual battery by an adult defendant on an adult female was made in March of 2015. The victim advised deputies that on March 6th, 2015, she decided to have a few drinks after work with some of her friends and co-workers at a local bar located in Citrus County.
A short time later, the defendant, Mr Shannon Heathcock, arrived and proceeded to purchase shots of alcohol for the victim and her friends.
The victim began to feel extremely intoxicated and walked outside the bar into the parking lot to vomit. The victim was escorted shortly after to her friend’s vehicle where she was placed in the front passenger’s seat. According to her friend and witness, the victim was passed out at this time.
The witness then left the victim in her vehicle while she went back into the bar to collect her belongings and finish her drink, prior to driving the victim home.
When the witness returned to the parking lot and opened the front door of her vehicle, she observed the victim with her pants pulled down and the Heathcock lying on top of her with his pants removed.
According to the witness, it appeared to her that Heathcock was trying to have sex with the victim while she was passed out.
Heathcock immediately dressed himself and exited the vehicle.
The witness then proceeded to drive the victim home.
The victim did not recall anything that occurred in the parking lot of the bar. She also advised deputies that she never gave consent for the defendant to have sexual intercourse with her, nor would she ever allow it. On March 12th, 2015, contact was made with the Heathcock at his residence where he advised deputies that he was at the bar in question on the night of the incident, but does not recall anything involving the victim.
Heathcock was then placed under arrest for attempted sexual battery of a physically helpless victim and transported to the Citrus County detention facility without incident.
Heathcock’s bond was set at $10,000.00 total, per the bond schedule.
