Man kills boyfriend’s cat with hammer

Travis “Tara” Jaggers, 41, of 3871 S. Millston Point in Homosassa, has been arrested for felony animal cruelty. Jaggers admitted to killing his boyfriend’s cat by hitting it in the head with a hammer, then burying it in the backyard.

Yesterday afternoon, Citrus County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call by Christopher Cheatam, who told deputies that his girlfriend,  Travis Jaggers, had killed his 13 year old cat named Ripper. Cheatam had left the house and when he returned home Jaggers told him that he had put all of the cats outside and they would no longer be staying in the house.

Cheatam had an eery feeling and he asked his girlfriend if he had killed any of his cats. Jaggers responded that he had killed Ripper because the cat came running into the house and he took a hammer and hit Ripper in the head. He buried the cat in a Playstation box and buried it’s body in the back yard of their home. He marked the grave by putting a slinky toy on top of the grave.

According to official reports from the citrus County Sheriff’s office, Jaggers initially told investigators that his name was Ms. Tara Jaggers, he then changed his mind and said his name was Mr. Travis William Jaggers. Jaggers told law enforcement, “I killed it by hitting it in the head with a hammer then I put it in a bag and put it in the trash. I did not feel that was right so I took it out of the trash and put it in a PS2 box and buried it out back.”

Jaggers went on to explain that the incident occurred on November 27, 2015 and he marked the date on a calendar by writing ‘Rest in Peace Ripper.”

When deputies asked Jaggers why he would hit a cat in the head with a hammer and bury it in the back yard he said, “because it ran into the house really fast and i grabbed it and smacked it.”

It’s noted in the arrest report that there was still blood spatter on the floor and walls.

Animal control will be exhuming Ripper’s body for a necropsy to confirm the cause of death.

Jaggers was transported to jail and his bond was set at $2000.
